These numbers are intentionally cautious and adjustable. A lifter with years of practice may regain coordination quickly. A break involving illness, persistent pain or injury needs a different starting point. Muscle-memory research finds retained cellular signals, but it does not give you permission to skip readaptation or promise a personal recovery date.
A simple plan for the first two weeks

Place at least one free day between A and B. A third session is optional: repeat whichever session left less soreness and a better overall response, without adding new movements. Machines and supports are not mandatory, but they reduce decisions while you recover rhythm, local tolerance and an honest feel for effort.
- Before the first working set
Choose a load you could clearly lift beyond the planned range. Ramp up gradually and keep warm-up sets out of the working-set count.
- After each exercise
Log load, repetitions and RIR. Add a note only when it changes the reading: shorter range, new grip, discomfort or unusually short rest.
- Before the next exposure
Compare the last useful set. If recovery and movement were steady, repeat or add a small dose. Otherwise hold or trim the work.
Choose the load without guessing
Worked example: the press you once did with 100 kg
Your old log shows 100 kg × 10 at 2 RIR. On day one, 70 kg gives you 8 clean reps at 4 RIR. Week 2: 70 × 10 at 3 RIR. Week 3: 75 × 9 at 2 RIR. Week 4: 77.5 × 9 at 2 RIR. You have not “lost” 22.5 kg; you have built four comparable references and can now progress without gambling.

What muscle memory actually tells us
There are good reasons to expect a return to differ from starting from zero. Human studies have observed epigenetic signatures, myonuclei or proteins that remain after detraining, and one small trial reported similar final outcomes between continuous training and brief detraining–retraining cycles. That is a compelling biological story, not a calculator for your comeback date.
The 2024 myonuclear paper is particularly useful because it restrains the hype: cellular persistence did not translate into a clearly superior change in hypertrophy during retraining. Coordination, familiarity and work tolerance may feel as if they return quickly. Tuesday’s load should still be chosen from the previous Tuesday, not from a molecular explanation.
