The answer changes with the job. Counting direct chest sets is simple; deciding whether to add, hold or redistribute work requires exercise context, effort, frequency and a clear view of what came from compound movements.
What “sets per muscle” actually contains

The 2026 meta-regression separated direct and indirect sets and compared several ways of quantifying indirect work. A fractional 0.5 method best fit its models. That is a research coding choice, not proof that every press, row or squat always contributes half a set to every secondary muscle.

One-week audit: run the same training through each app

Use four already completed workouts and do not change exercises or sets to flatter a product.

The result we want
Chest: 6 direct sets; back: 6 direct sets; triceps: 4 direct sets plus non-equated participation in presses. An app may attribute them differently. Do not force its number to match; document the difference and choose the convention you can keep.

Use the signal without chasing a perfect number
Read several-week trends rather than a decimal. When exercises, range and attribution rules stay stable, a large shift can flag a schedule change. Then look at performance and recovery: more counted sets are not automatically useful when reps fall, RIR drifts or discomfort changes the movement.

Stop the set if you feel sharp pain, dizziness or discomfort that changes the movement. A volume graph cannot diagnose an injury or justify training through a clinical warning; seek a qualified healthcare professional when appropriate.
A three-week test before committing

Keep the same convention and see whether the view helps you hold, redistribute or adjust work.

Swap one machine, correct an entry and retrieve history. The tool should survive a real gym week.

Keep the app only if you can explain its total, the action it informed and how you can take your data out.
