RIR explained with one simple example
Repetitions in reserve describe how much capacity you think remained at the end of a set. At three RIR you estimate three additional reps; at one RIR, one; at zero RIR, no more while maintaining the exercise's agreed technical standard. High values such as five or more tend to be less precise because the endpoint is distant. A small, consistent scale is enough for most practical logs.
Define failure before using the scale. It can mean being unable to complete another rep with the intended range and technique, not any movement possible after changing the pattern. If that boundary shifts every day, RIR shifts as well. A simple standard—the same variation, range and minimum technique—makes the estimate more comparable without pretending it is a laboratory measurement.
Example: 8 reps at 2 RIR
You end a set after eight reps and estimate that two more were possible with the same range and agreed technique. Log 8 reps at 2 RIR. This does not mean the muscle stored exactly two measurable reps; it is your best estimate of that margin at that moment.
How RIR relates to RPE
Here, RPE means the strength-specific RIR-based scale, not every Borg scale or a whole-session RPE. In the convention described in PubMed 26049792, RPE 10 is associated with zero RIR, RPE 9 with roughly one RIR and RPE 8 with about two reps in reserve. The relationship is useful, not an exact mathematical equivalence. Some athletes think more clearly in remaining reps; others prefer perceived intensity.

Choose one scale as the main language so you do not duplicate fields unnecessarily. If a program prescribes RPE while your app records RIR, document the conversion you will use. Do not change the rule after seeing the result you hoped for. The value lies in describing the set with a stable rule and communicating it clearly to a coach or to your future self.

How to use RIR for load selection
- Set the rep range and margin before loading
Example: 6–10 reps at 2 RIR. The target combines output and effort; ten reps at 0 RIR are not the same as ten at 2 RIR.
- Choose a cautious first load
Use a comparable set or a conservative estimate. The first exposure helps you approach the target; it is not a test of whether you guessed perfectly.
- Log reps and RIR when the set ends
Do it before the next set changes your memory. Note any meaningful change in technique, rest, exercise variation or machine.
- Make one small adjustment and observe again
If the set missed the rep range or margin, use the smallest practical increment. Avoid changing load, reps, technique and rest at once.
- Use several sets to decide the next exposure
One set informs you; two or three comparable exposures give a better basis for holding, increasing or reducing load.

How close to failure you need to train
The evidence does not reduce to either “closer is always better” or “failure never matters.” A 2023 meta-analysis (PubMed 36334240) found no evidence that momentary muscular failure was superior to non-failure training for hypertrophy. A 2024 exploratory meta-regression (PubMed 38970765) found that changes in muscle size tended to increase when sets ended closer to failure, while warning that the exact shape of the relationship remains unclear because many RIR values had to be estimated from study descriptions.
In an eight-week trial with 18 resistance-trained participants (PubMed 38393985), legs assigned to 1–2 RIR and legs taken to failure had similar changes in quadriceps thickness; failure produced more velocity and repetition loss. That is a specific result, not a universal rule. As a practical starting point, keep margin through most work and reserve closer-to-failure calibration for stable exercises and situations where the cost is controlled.
Why RIR changes when you are fatigued
The estimate is not perfectly accurate, even in trained people. In one squat study (PubMed 30747900), predictions were better closer to failure and in lower-repetition sets; training age did not explain accuracy. In practice, exercise familiarity, motivation and fatigue can still influence the call. When uncertain, log a range—between two and three, for example—and keep the same convention.
A 2026 crossover trial (PubMed 42458937) also found greater neuromuscular and perceived fatigue and metabolic stress when sets ended closer to failure, with responses differing by exercise and load. The result helps explain the acute cost of approaching the limit; it does not turn one workout's RIR into an individual recovery diagnosis.
If several exercises suddenly feel closer to failure with unchanged loads, review recovery and volume. If only one changes, inspect technique, variation, order or equipment. RIR does not explain the cause; it shows that the relationship between work and perceived effort changed. That signal deserves attention, not an automatic intensity increase to prove you can still complete the plan.
How to improve your RIR estimate
- Choose a stable exercise
A machine or isolation movement with a simple exit is usually more suitable than a technical or high-consequence lift.
- Define range and technique
Decide what will count before the set. If the standard changes at the end, you will not know which margin you estimated.
- Prepare the safety setup
Use safeties, a clear exit or a spotter when relevant. Do not calibrate through pain, worrying symptoms or a known contraindication.
- Call RIR before continuing
Record the prediction and, only occasionally, complete additional reps to compare it with the outcome.
- Look for a pattern, not a perfect score
Notice whether you tend to underestimate long sets or find one particular exercise harder to read.
Research needs its boundaries. One study (PubMed 36135029) found high test-retest reliability when prescribing a 1-RIR load for bench press and deadlift, but it involved 15 young novice-trained males and a specific 3-, 5- and 8-rep protocol. It shows the tool can be repeatable in that context, not that everyone estimates every exercise accurately.
Log RIR so it can support progression
Save RIR beside load and reps immediately after work sets. Review several workouts: more reps with the same load and similar RIR can be consistent with progress; the same result with less reserve only shows that perceived effort changed. It does not diagnose fatigue or explain the cause. Add a note when technique, machine or rest changed.

Use the field to choose among maintaining, progressing or adjusting, not to chase zero in every set. A session may emphasize practice, volume or closer effort in specific work. The app should show the plan and reference without pushing one intensity. RIR is a language for describing effort and improving decisions, not a grade for how hard you tried as a person.

An example of communicating with a coach
Instead of writing that training felt heavy, report: incline press, 70 kilograms, nine repetitions, one RIR, one rep below last week and similar rest. Add that the warm-up already moved slowly when relevant. The combination lets a coach ask about fatigue, technique or volume without guessing what heavy means. A shared convention removes the need for a long explanation.
The coach may hold the load, remove a set, change the target or leave everything alone because the variation is normal. Record what you agreed and review it later. RIR improves the conversation when it gives both people a shared reference; it weakens it when treated as exact truth.
Review the change across several workouts, not only the next day. If performance returns, fatigue may have played a part; if nothing changes, look for another explanation. RIR helps you observe, act and check rather than label every set as right or wrong.
Keep the original estimate visible when a coach disagrees. Replacing it hides the difference that can improve calibration. Add the reviewed interpretation beside it and compare later sessions. The gap between perception and observation is useful training information, provided it is treated as a learning signal rather than a mistake to erase.
