Verdict: decide who gets authority over the plan
The useful question is not only which app logs best, but where the microcycle you will repeat comes from. BUSTAFIT fits when you follow a structured routine and want useful references, load-or-rep guidance and, where relevant, blocks assigned by your coach. Its value is preserving the plan's authority while making the next decision clearer.
| Need | Start with | Boundary to accept |
|---|---|---|
| Keep your routine and make better exposure decisions on iPhone | BUSTAFIT | No documented adaptive whole-program generation |
| Receive a fresh session around history and equipment | Fitbod | The session can change; test what you need fixed |
| Run a stable plan with targets for every set | Alpha Progression Pro | Generator and recommendations are Pro |
| Delegate a complete program inside Hevy | Hevy Trainer Pro | Trainer and overload guidance are Pro |
| Begin with coach or community programs | Boostcamp | Separate library, custom and Pro personalization |
| Write and control each routine yourself | Strong | History supports your judgment; no generator is documented |
Three ways a hypertrophy plan can begin
A structured or coach-written routine prioritizes continuity and control: the app should preserve exercises, ranges and rules already defined. A curated program begins with someone else's published structure and needs sensible substitutions when a real gym interrupts it. A generated plan uses your answers or history to propose the structure. No origin is automatically better; the expensive mistake is buying one while expecting another.
- Authority: name whether the athlete, coach, program author or algorithm decides.
- Horizon: check whether you receive one workout, one week or a recognizable block.
- Control: edit exercise, sets, range, order and substitution without losing intent.
- Change: identify which signal produces new guidance and which parts remain fixed.
- Exit: confirm what you can keep if you leave the tool.
ACSM's 2026 update emphasizes consistency and individualization over unnecessary complexity. It does not validate any commercial algorithm. It does support a practical purchasing standard: you should understand the program well enough to follow it and adjust it to your context.
The same comparison criteria for all six apps
| App | Platform | Plan origin | Control and editing | Adaptation or progression | Tier | Documented exit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| BUSTAFIT | iPhone | Structured routine or a block assigned by your coach | Substitutions; coach can adjust saved plans with permission | Last reference plus practical load-or-rep guidance from load, reps and RIR | Current App Store offer; confirm terms in your market | Reviewed listing does not publish history export |
| Fitbod | iOS and Android | Session generated from profile, history, equipment and time; also scratch-built or saved | Edit, swap, reorder and reuse before, during or after | Can regenerate sets, reps and weight, or weight only, from recent data | History-based generation and new logging require a subscription after trial | Writes workouts to Apple Health or Health Connect; CSV not established |
| Alpha Progression | iOS and Android | Free self-built plan or personalized Pro generator | Edit exercises, sets and reps or build from scratch | Weight, rep and intensity targets for each set in Pro | Generator, recommendations, RIR and charts: Pro | Published CSV export |
| Hevy Trainer Pro | iOS, Android and web | Complete program generated by an algorithm | Shows one routine at a time; the reviewed Trainer source establishes no editing path | Recommends when to increase weight and by how much from performance | Trainer and overload guidance: Pro | Exports workouts or measurements; limited direct Strong CSV import |
| Boostcamp | iOS and Android | Coach or community program, custom plan or personalized Pro plan | Multiweek builder and substitutions inside the program | Program rules; additional personalization and analytics in Pro | Library and tracker free; advanced personalization: Pro | History export not established in reviewed sources |
| Strong | iOS and Android | Empty workout or template you create | Add, delete, reorder and edit exercises or sets | History for your decisions; no generator documented | Documented base flow; confirm current limits in the app | CSV export; the file cannot be imported back into Strong |
“Not established” does not mean a capability is impossible. It means we do not turn it into a promise because it did not appear in the official source reviewed. We also avoid treating every form of “adaptation” as equivalent: it may mean regenerating a session, progressing targets inside a plan or presenting a reference so that you decide.
Which app fits each planning scenario
Choose BUSTAFIT when you follow a structured routine and the problem lives between sets: remembering the useful exposure, logging load, reps and RIR, and deciding whether to hold, add or adjust. It also fits when your coach assigns and edits blocks. If you need to delegate the plan's origin, compare the options that explicitly document that job.
Choose Fitbod when you want the day to begin with a proposed session built around your constraints and a saved template that can be preserved or regenerated. Choose Alpha Progression Pro when you would rather see a recognizable structure for weeks and receive set-level targets inside it. They automate different jobs, so test the kind of change that bothers you most before subscribing.
Choose Hevy Trainer Pro when you want an algorithmic program inside the Hevy ecosystem with explicit progressive-overload guidance. Choose Boostcamp when a coach or community program is the starting point, or when you want to build several weeks from the web. Choose Strong when you already program for yourself and want a manual journal with a clear CSV exit.
Original template: sign a plan contract
Complete this card for each finalist before importing anything. It is not a validated scientific scale. Its purpose is to expose five decisions that often hide behind the word “personalized.” If you cannot answer a cell from the app or its documentation, mark it pending instead of guessing.
| Clause | Reproducible question | Answer to write |
|---|---|---|
| Author | Who chooses exercises, sets and ranges at the start? | Me, coach, program author or algorithm |
| Horizon | What remains recognizable for four weeks? | Workout, week, block or nothing |
| Editing | What can I change without breaking progression and history? | Exact fields and observed effect |
| Trigger | Which signal changes the next instruction? | Result, RIR, missed work, calendar or manual choice |
| Exit | Which routine and history can I keep elsewhere? | CSV, health platform, link, manual copy or undocumented |
An honest decision statement
I choose BUSTAFIT because I already have a four-week block and want better between-set references on iPhone; I accept that the app does not document adaptive whole-program generation, and I will keep a separate copy of the structure if portability matters.
Run three workouts before migrating
- Workout 1: normal
Reproduce three familiar exercises and check whether the app preserves sets, ranges, rest and your first decision.
- Workout 2: different performance
Log one set above or below target, then record what changes, who decides and whether you understand why.
- Workout 3: real gym
Substitute an occupied exercise, return to the original and confirm that its history and purpose remain easy to interpret.
- Close
Export or copy one workout, revisit the plan contract and accept one explicit limitation before moving the active block.
| Decision | 0 | 1 | 2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| I know who is in charge | I cannot explain it | I infer it | Authority is explicit |
| Intent survives | The change breaks the plan | Cleanup is required | The structure stays clear |
| I understand progression | A number appears without a reason | Several screens need interpretation | I can state action and signal |
| I can leave | I lose what matters | I accept manual work | The exit I need is documented |
Do not use the total as a universal ranking. Reject a finalist that scores zero on a decision you cannot delegate, even if it wins elsewhere. Move only the active block after one candidate survives all three workouts; the historical archive can wait.
External video and the next step
The English video is a long-form personal comparison of Strong, Hevy, Boostcamp, StrengthLog and Liftosaur. We reviewed it because the author demonstrates the planning trade-offs in context, but it does not cover all six products, omits BUSTAFIT and provides no evidence for our matrix. The visible description contains topic hashtags and no sponsorship or affiliate disclosure; that visible absence does not prove that no relationship exists.

If you follow a structured routine and want each log to end in a clearer decision, try the BUSTAFIT path. If you need the app to author the program, take the five-answer contract to Fitbod, Alpha Progression Pro, Hevy Trainer Pro or Boostcamp before choosing.
