ACSM's resistance-training update places consistency and individualization ahead of rigid rules. Before searching for a new routine, show that the current one had a fair opportunity: enough sessions, recognizable exercises and recorded effort.
Not yet a plateau
Four planned weeks, but six of twenty workouts missed, three exercise changes and no RIR recorded. The output is not more sets or calories; first build two weeks that can be compared.
Review progression, effort and volume
Progressive resistance training supports hypertrophy, but progression does not mean adding weight every workout. It may also appear as more repetitions at the same RIR, better control or more completed work under stable conditions.
Recent evidence associates greater weekly volume with larger average adaptations, with diminishing returns. It does not show that adding sets always fixes a plateau. When quality falls, workouts are skipped or performance declines, volume may exceed what can be executed.

Check energy and protein
If training is stable but average body weight and outcomes do not move, review energy intake. Evidence does not define one universal optimal surplus, so avoid large jumps: use a conservative starting point, observe 2–3 weeks and adjust by a small amount.
For healthy adults doing resistance training, about 1.6 g/kg/day of protein is a useful population reference rather than a law. Check the average and adherence before increasing it. A theoretical target does not help when it is reached only twice a week.
