The short answer: choose the split you can sustain
Full body, upper/lower and push pull legs can all organize productive hypertrophy training. The label does not win on its own: start with the week you can actually run and the way it distributes recoverable work. Compare full body, upper/lower and PPL under the same conditions
A fair comparison keeps weekly volume, exercise selection, effort, rest and progression reasonably similar. If one option adds days, sets and better time slots together, you have not isolated the split. ACSM's 2026 position stand identifies volume as relevant to hypertrophy. A recent dose-response meta-regression likewise found a positive volume relationship with diminishing returns, while higher frequency's effect on hypertrophy remained compatible with negligible effects.

Those day ranges describe common uses, not biological requirements. A three-day PPL does not stop working because each area appears once that week, and higher-frequency full body does not automatically win. Ask whether the structure holds useful work, lets you train with repeatable effort and survives ordinary life without turning session length or fatigue into a reason to quit.
Original decision tree: availability first, then time and recovery
- Lock in the days that really exist
Count only slots you can keep through four normal weeks. With two or three, test full body first; with four, compare full body and upper/lower; with five or six stable slots, add PPL or a hybrid to the shortlist.
- Set a hard session budget
Define the real minutes from warm-up to final set. If a workout keeps breaking that ceiling, redistribute work before adding another exercise.
- Distribute recoverable work
Check whether you can complete the planned work at a comparable level and recover for the next exposure. More work does not keep returning the same benefit; the evidence describes diminishing returns.
- Choose the least fragile week
Simulate one missed day. Keep the structure in which you know what moves, stays and can be dropped without writing an entirely new week.
Calendar examples without turning them into templates
These calendars show only where each session label lands. They assign no exercises, sets or weekly volume. Start from the same weekly objective and change only the distribution when comparing them.

Rotate the labels if your week starts elsewhere. If you have three days and enjoy PPL, judge that three-session rotation on its own results instead of comparing it with a six-day PPL that has twice as many training opportunities. Matching conditions stops the split name from taking credit for volume or time availability.
Audit the split after four weeks
- Week 1: measure friction
Record attendance, actual workout duration and any planned work left unfinished. Do not replace the split after one awkward session.
- Week 2: watch recovery
Check whether you reach the next exposure able to repeat useful performance without treating isolated soreness as a diagnosis.
- Week 3: test the real calendar
Note every moved or missed workout and whether the structure lets you continue without rebuilding the whole week.
- Week 4: make one decision
Keep the split, shorten sessions, redistribute work or change structure. Avoid changing exercises, volume, effort and schedule all at once.

This scorecard is not a validated scientific test. A zero for adherence or time matters more than an attractive total because it breaks the week. Read progression through comparable exposures that include load, reps and effort. The cited 2022 trial found both load and repetition progression viable within its eight-week design; neither strategy requires a particular split name.
A defensible decision
I am keeping upper/lower for another four weeks because the sessions fit, I could move one day and my exposures remained comparable. I am not claiming it beats full body; I am saying it fits this calendar better.
