The week-one to week-three averages differ by 0.46 kg across two weeks. Calculate (80.59 − 80.13) ÷ 80.13 ÷ 2 × 100: about 0.29% per week. Any one weigh-in could have told a different story; the full series supports a calmer conversation.

How to weigh so the comparison is worth making

  1. Repeat the context

    Weigh in the morning, after using the bathroom, before food and in similar clothing where practical. If that is not possible, note the exception.

  2. Keep seven readings

    Add the week’s measurements and divide by the number taken. If days are missing, do not invent them; record how many informed the average.

  3. Compare three weeks

    Read the change between weekly averages and calculate it relative to the first. Do not turn one salty weekend into an automatic cut.

  4. Cross-check training

    Ask whether load, repetitions and RIR improved, held or declined. Weight without training context says little about the purpose of a bulk.

  5. Change one variable

    If an adjustment is genuinely warranted, make it small and hold it long enough to read another trend. Two simultaneous changes erase the cause.

Two daily-variability studies add perspective without offering a universal correction: one followed a single healthy man over a long period, while another observed active men around exercise in the heat. They remind us that weight fluctuates; they cannot predict your exact fluctuation.

Example: the same percentage, two different decisions

Ana gains about 0.3% per week, adds repetitions and feels recovered, so she holds. Luis gains the same percentage but changes exercises every session and sleeps five hours; adding or removing calories still does not answer the main question. Stabilise training and recovery first, then measure again.

A trial in elite athletes compared higher with more moderate energy intake. The higher-intake group gained more body weight and fat without a clear difference in lean-mass gain. That specific sample is not a law for everyone, but it is a useful reason not to equate “faster” with “better”. A separate review concluded that the exact surplus that maximises muscle while minimising fat remains unknown.
