Failure and 0 RIR are not magic words

Everyday conversations mix these definitions, and research has also used inconsistent failure terms. Therefore, 0 RIR does not automatically prove momentary failure. It is a prospective estimate: you predict no acceptable repetition remained. Observed failure requires an unsuccessful next repetition under the protocol's definition.
What the evidence says without false certainty
- Meta-analyses do not show always training to failure to be superior to non-failure for hypertrophy in every setting.
- Meta-regressions suggest getting closer to failure may relate to greater hypertrophy, but the exact point remains uncertain and some RIR values were estimated at study level.
- In an eight-week trial with trained participants, 1–2 RIR and failure produced similar quadriceps thickness changes while failure caused greater acute velocity and repetition loss.
- A newer single-set trial compared 2 RIR with failure; its specific design cannot establish a universal rule for multi-set programs.
The useful conclusion is not that failure has no place, but that its cost and benefit belong inside the program. A failure set on a stable machine at the end of a workout is not the same decision as a free-weight squat near the beginning with important work remaining.

- Define the standard
Clarify the range and technique that count as a repetition before starting.
- Set an intention
Decide whether this set ends with reserve or becomes a deliberate test; do not leave it to the mood of the moment.
- Observe the cost
Compare repetition drop, perceived velocity and technique in later sets.
- Log what happened
Record estimated actual RIR; if failure occurred, distinguish observed failure from estimated 0 RIR.
- Review the trend
Keep the approach that supports progression and program completion, not the one that produces the most extreme feeling.
One workout, two decisions
Leg press: three sets of 10–12. You complete 12 @2, 11 @1 and let the final stable-machine set finish near 0 RIR because no pattern work remains. On Romanian deadlifts, you preserve 2–3 RIR to protect the standard. You did not choose conflicting philosophies; you applied different criteria to different tasks.
Log to learn, not to impress
Log load, repetitions and RIR immediately. If momentary failure occurred, add a short note: concentric failure under the defined technique, or stopped at technical breakdown. This distinction prevents a zero from appearing more exact than it was.
