Make the decision between sets

Autoregulation does not mean rewriting the plan after every sensation. It means using a relevant observation to preserve the session's intent. Load is a tool: if today's weight turns a controlled set into an unplanned grind to failure, keeping it for pride may move you farther from the intended work than a small, documented reduction.

Which signal should change the next set?

A 60-second protocol for adjusting without guessing

  1. Close the set

Rack or place the load down and exit the position safely. Never try to alter the weight while performing a repetition.

  2. Rebuild the target

Recall the rep range, intended RIR, variation and rest. Without a target there is no measurable departure.

  3. Find one cause

Check setup, range, tempo, rest and whether the load was logged incorrectly. Fix context errors first.

  4. Change one variable

If the miss remains, reduce the load enough to recover the target; do not simultaneously cut load, reps and technique.

  5. Test and record

Perform the next set, log outcome, RIR and reason. That observation is more useful than a generic bad-day label.

Worked example

Target: dumbbell press for 8–10 reps at 2 RIR. Set one: 30 kg × 9 at 2 RIR. Set two: 30 kg × 7 with no clean rep left after the planned rest. You reduce set three to 28 kg, reach 9 at 2 RIR and log that the change followed a confirmed miss. You do not make the reduction permanent until the next exposure provides more evidence.

What a load reduction cannot solve

  • It does not diagnose accumulated fatigue; one set contains too much noise.
  • It does not turn a difficult session into a deload week; that requires a broader trend and plan.
  • It does not treat pain or injury. Stop if a symptom changes your movement or concerns you, and seek appropriate assessment.
  • It does not correct technique degraded by rushing, setup or unfamiliarity.
  • It does not prove the program has too much volume; review multiple comparable exposures first.

Autoregulation research describes several methods—RIR, RPE, velocity and repetitions—and their limitations. RIR estimation can improve with practice and tends to become more accurate closer to failure, but it remains an estimate. This protocol therefore combines outcome, effort and context instead of treating one number as automatic truth.

Video summary

Flow High Performance explains in English how RIR and RPE can support autoregulated programming. The video broadens the context; it does not replace this guide's between-set protocol or serve as scientific evidence. The channel promotes coaching, books and templates. BUSTAFIT has no commercial relationship with the channel and does not endorse those offers.

BUSTAFIT is useful here because it keeps load, repetitions, RIR and history inside the iPhone workout flow. It does not claim to detect fatigue or reduce weight for you. The practical advantage is quieter: you can retrieve the useful reference, record the adjustment and preserve its reason instead of reconstructing it from memory next week.

A minimum note with useful context

28 kg × 9 @2 RIR; reduced from 30 kg because the previous set reached 7 @0–1 after full rest. This note separates a deliberate adjustment from a logging error.
