Direct answer: put the performance priority first

The first exercise should be the one that most needs a clean strength or repetition reference in the current block. It may be multi-joint or single-joint. If press performance is the priority, place it early; if one direct arm or muscle action is the explicit target, that action can go first even when later performance falls. The decision is a tradeoff, not a perfect sequence.

A meta-analysis of eleven studies found larger strength gains for the exercise performed first and no significant hypertrophy difference between multi-joint-first and single-joint-first orders. The 2026 ACSM position stand reached a compatible reading: early placement favors exercise-specific strength, while order did not consistently affect hypertrophy.

Why one signal is not enough

If a row loses two repetitions after moving to fourth place, the change confirms that conditions are no longer equivalent; it does not prove the new order is bad or that the muscle will grow less. Keep sequence, rest and execution stable across several exposures before interpreting the trend.

    Choose the exercise or function whose performance should arrive least contaminated by fatigue.

    Decide which work must preserve quality even when it does not open the workout.

  3. 3. Place the rest by tolerable cost

    Order remaining work by how poorly it handles fatigue, setup demands and the ability to preserve repeatable execution.

    Name which exercise may perform worse because it comes later so the cost does not look like an unexpected failure.

    Keep the sequence across comparable exposures and change one variable when a problem repeats.
